Travel can be demanding, even for the most energetic person. Not only are you away from your familiar environment and routine, but you are constantly being stimulated mentally, physically and probably emotionally. While travel can be immensely fun and satisfying, it can also be exhausting.
How do you prevent burnout? First, don’t try to schedule and be active every minute of every day. While it’s tempting to maximize your time, especially if it’s limited, it’s very easy to overdo it. Give yourself frequent breaks where you can recoup and refresh. Meal times are good, and perhaps an afternoon nap or an occasional evening where you retire to bed early.
If you’re traveling for more than a week, take a half or whole day just to relax. My rule of thumb is at least one half day a week. Also, be sure to allow time to do laundry, write post cards or journal.
Whatever you do, don’t run yourself so ragged that your memories are more of stress and exhaustion and not of fun and experiences. Relax occasionally and enjoy!
