Can’t afford to travel right now? Then use your imagination.
Find an ethnic restaurant with the appropriate music and décor. Order a beverage, appetizer, dessert or meal and imagine yourself in the country of origin. I recently enjoyed breakfast at a local Mexican restaurant. The place was charming and the music set the mood. I imagined myself in a small village in the heart of Mexico. It also helped that many of the staff spoke Spanish.
Explore a local ethnic community. Many cities of size have neighborhoods populated by immigrants – Chinatown, Little Italy, Greek Town, Little Vietnam, etc. They provide wonderful opportunities to learn about other cultures through their shops, restaurants, and local lifestyle, and at relatively little cost.
Attend international festivals and street fairs. These events are a great way for different cultures to share their rich heritage with the larger community. Try everything – the food, the dance, the activities, even the language.
For any of these, take a travel guide for the corresponding country or region and start planning your next adventure! Ole!
